Jones Day Singapore sponsors the Golden Years Project 2014
Each year, the Law Society of Singapore Pro Bono Services Office has supported the Golden Years Project, a pro bono initiative that attends to the legal and practical needs of seniors. This year, Jones Day Singapore also proudly sponsored the event. In addition to providing funding for the project, the Singapore Office contributed by introducing law school undergraduates, particularly freshmen from the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Management University, to this year’s beneficiary organisation, the Kreta Ayer Seniors Activity Center, and liaising with the Law Society of Singapore.
In light of the rapidly aging population in Singapore, the Golden Years Project seeks to raise seniors’ awareness of their legal rights, explain relevant legal issues they may currently face, and attend to specific legal needs they may face in the future. A concurrent objective is to attend to seniors’ practical needs, including providing friendship and compassion. The project also aims to introduce the concept of pro bono work to the freshmen, by showing them how lawyers can give back to their community.
The Golden Years Project consists of 3 stages: (1) a legal talk; (2) a befriending session, and (3) a mobile legal clinic. The first two stages were held on July 15, 2014, and the mobile legal clinic was held on July 23. The staff at the Activity Center helped publicize the project to the seniors who frequent the center. The project’s organizing committee recruited law school undergraduates to serve as volunteers while the Pro Bono Services Office recruited lawyers to conduct the talk and legal clinic.
