Jones Day supports Teach For America’s work to expand educational opportunity in Dallas

Jones Day Dallas has given over $35,000 to support Teach For America’s efforts to expand educational opportunity in Dallas public schools. In addition, over 80 attorneys have connected with individual Teach For America teachers to welcome them to Dallas and provide financial assistance for classroom supplies.

Teach for America recruits, trains, and supports top college graduates who commit to teach for two years in underserved public schools and become lifelong leaders in the movement to end educational inequity.

Jones Day’s $35,000 gift to Teach For America came from individual attorney and staff donations. The funds support Teach For America’s work in Dallas, where it began placing teachers this fall.

"As a supporter of Teach For America, I am thrilled to see our city benefit from their expansion to Dallas. At Jones Day we're excited to support the work of Teach For America's teachers and expand the educational opportunities for the Dallas students they will reach," said Dallas Partner-in-Charge George Manning.

In June, Jones Day attorneys and staff welcomed Teach For America's charter Dallas corps at a reception at Jones Day's office. Corps members graduated from top schools across the country and the state, including the University of Texas, Southern Methodist University, and Texas A&M. During the reception, Jones Day attorneys and Teach For America alumni John Chase and Jodie Michalski spoke about their teaching experiences.

"It is exciting to welcome our first group of Dallas corps members to our community," Michalski said. "As alumni of Teach For America, John and I understand the challenges new teachers face, and we are eager to help them maximize their impact in the classroom."

Last month, the attorneys and corps members reconnected during small group dinners at the homes of Jones Day attorneys, where the attorneys presented gift cards to the teachers to help buy classroom supplies. Today, 94 Teach For America corps members are teaching approximately 7,000 students in 30 Dallas schools.

The dinners were also attended by many of the 80 Teach For America alumni living in the Dallas area. Beyond their impact in the corps, Teach For America’s 17,000 alumni across the country are providing critical leadership in the movement to end educational inequity. Two-thirds of Teach For America alumni continue to work full-time in the field of education, modeling excellence as teachers and school and district leaders. Many other alumni advocate for educational equity through their work as elected officials, policy makers, and founders and leaders of social reform initiatives.

"Teach For America would not be in Dallas today without the tremendous support we have received from the Dallas community," said Charles Glover, executive director of Teach For America-Dallas. "We are grateful to the Jones Day team for their support and the warm welcome they have given our teachers. We are thrilled to have the Firm as one of many partners in helping more Dallas students have the opportunity to receive an excellent education."

Support for Teach For America is the newest addition to the array of local community and charity activities that Jones Day Dallas supports, including Rainbow Days, Special Care and Career Services, United Way, Make-A-Wish Foundation, St. Phillips School and Community Center and many others.
